If you have a commercial building and are not sure if you are in compliance with the ADA Laws, the following information is the general restroom requirements. If you need more information try the ADA Resources menu or give us a call.
ADA Restroom Information
Doors
Interior doors (including toilet partition doors) must push or pull open.
Door handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other opening devices should have a shape that is easy to operate with one hand, without grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist
Door handles should be mounted no higher than 48" above the floor.
Grab Bars
Must have a diameter of 1-1/4" to 1-1/2".
Clearance between the grab bar(s) and the wall is 1 1/2".
Required mounting height is 33" from the centerline of the grab bar to the floor.
The structural strength of all grab bars must withstand 250 lb.
Grab bars need to be screwed into 2x backing or a wood stud
Standard toilet compartments require one grab bar 42" long to be mounted on the sidewall or partition nearest the toilet, no more than 12" from the back wall.
A second grab bar 36" long must be mounted on the back wall, no more than 6" from the sidewall or partition nearest the toilet.
Toilets
The height of toilet seats must be 17" to 19" above the floor
The center of toilet must be 18" to the side wall
Wheelchair Accessible Toilet Compartments
Required for all new construction and alterations with an out swinging door.
The toilet centerline must be 18" from the nearest sidewall or partition.
Horizontal grab bars must be mounted behind the toilet and on the nearest sidewall or partition.
Single Person Washrooms Width
60" Minimum turning radius inside restroom
32" Minimum clear space in front of toilets
32” Minimum clear space between the toilet and the sink
Multiple Person Restrooms with stalls
Wheelchair-accessible compartment with an out swinging door, 32” clear space
The toilet must be centered on the back wall.
Grab bars must be mounted on each sidewall or partition.
